Uganda's Parliament has passed the Digital Economy Bill 2026, a comprehensive piece of legislation designed to regulate digital transactions, protect consumers, and promote e-commerce across the country.
Speaking after the vote, the Minister of ICT welcomed the development, calling it "a significant step forward for Uganda's digital transformation agenda."
The bill introduces new requirements for digital payment platforms, data protection standards, and establishes a Digital Economy Authority to oversee implementation.
Key provisions include mandatory registration for all digital payment platforms, a consumer protection fund, and penalties for data breaches.
