Operations at Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda were disrupted in the early hours of Sunday after armed security personnel surrounded the company's premises in Namuwongo and the Kampala Serena Hotel, forcing several of its media platforms off air.

The security deployment reportedly began shortly after midnight following public declarations by the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announcing that NTV Uganda and the Daily Monitor would be shut down.
By around 5:00 a.m., NTV Uganda and Spark TV had gone off air, leaving viewers with blank screens displaying a "video unavailable" message. Radio stations 90.4 Dembe FM and 93.3 KFM also experienced temporary interruptions during the operation.
Staff working inside the affected premises reported being unable to leave or access the buildings as security personnel maintained a heavy presence throughout the morning.

Earlier in the night, Gen. Muhoozi posted on social media that, "NTV and Monitor are being shut down from today," before adding that the two media outlets would not resume operations without his permission. He also stated that he does not believe in a free press, saying the media should instead be guided by what he described as "cadres of the revolution."
The operation follows several days of public threats directed at Nation Media Group by the army chief, who had previously claimed he was waiting for authorization from President Yoweri Museveni before taking action against the media house.
Nation Media Group Uganda owns several major media platforms, including NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Daily Monitor, The East African, 93.3 KFM, 90.4 Dembe FM, Ennyanda newspaper and The Nation Courier.
By the time of publication, neither the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), the Uganda Police Force nor the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) had issued an official statement explaining the security operation or the legal basis for the shutdown.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over media freedom and the safety of journalists in Uganda as the country heads into a politically significant period.
