MOGADISHU — Somali referee Omar Artan has been handed a prestigious UEFA Super Cup assignment just days after his dream of officiating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was cut short following a denial of entry into the United States.
Artan, 34, had been selected among 52 FIFA referees for the World Cup and was set to become the first Somali official to referee at football's biggest tournament.

Referee Omar Artan, who was denied entry to the United States, is welcomed by supporters upon his arrival in Mogadishu, Somalia, Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
However, his historic journey came to an abrupt halt when U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials denied him entry upon arrival in Miami. Authorities said the referee was found inadmissible after a vetting process and was subsequently returned to Istanbul before flying back to Somalia.
The decision sparked disappointment among football fans in Somalia, where Artan has become a symbol of achievement and national pride.
But in a dramatic turn of events, UEFA has offered the highly regarded official another opportunity on the international stage.
European football's governing body has appointed Artan to officiate the UEFA Super Cup clash between Aston Villa of England and French champions Paris Saint-Germain. The match is scheduled for August 12 in Salzburg, Austria.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin praised the Somali referee, saying the appointment reflects confidence in his ability and experience.
"Omar Artan is an excellent young but already experienced referee who has proven himself at the highest level of African football," Ceferin said in a statement.
"Football is made to connect people, and UEFA wants to show its respect for Omar and his outstanding officiating skills."
The appointment adds another milestone to Artan's rapidly growing career. In 2025, he was named CAF Referee of the Year, becoming one of Africa's most respected match officials.
His career highlights include officiating at two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and taking charge of the second leg of the 2025 CAF Champions League final between Egypt's Pyramids FC and South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns in Cairo.
Although the World Cup opportunity slipped away, the UEFA Super Cup assignment places Artan under the spotlight of one of European football's most prestigious fixtures.
For many in Somalia and across Africa, the appointment is a reminder that setbacks do not always mark the end of a journey. Instead, they can open doors to new opportunities.
All eyes will now be on Salzburg in August as Omar Artan takes centre stage and continues to build a career that has already inspired a generation of African referees.
